Almost 100 runners turned out in windy conditions yesterday morning for the inaugural Compass 10K Beach Run at Woolacombe.

The race, which was organised by Ilfracombe’s Compass Rotary Club, attracted nearly 100 runners from as far as Cornwall and the Midlands.  As well as the run itself, there were fun and games for the whole family; sandcastle competition, fun races, treasure hunt, stream ball race and throwing the wellie!

All proceeds from the event will go towards the RMB Chivenor Memorial Garden.

The overall mens winner was Joey Jordan in 42 minutes 2 seconds while the first  woman was Rosemary Terrible in 45 minutes 40 seconds.

In the 19 to 35 age category the first man was Joey Jordan while Abby Constant was the first woman in 50 minutes and 8 seconds.

Lee Carter was the first male to finish in the 36 to 45 age category with a time of 45 minutes and 12 seconds while the first woman in this category was Miranda Nugent in 55 minutes and 45 seconds.

The first male to complete the course in the 46 to 55 age category was Peter Blackmore in 46 minutes 38 seconds while Rosemary Terrible was the first woman in this category.

The first male aged 56 or over was David Cottingham in 58 minutes and 22 seconds while the first woman aged 15 to 18 was Frances Tod in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 47 seconds.

Compass Rotary Club member Peter Cooper said: “We were very happy with the turnout.  To get almost 100 runners in the first year is amazing and we hope to double that next year.  We’ve had lots of positive feedback from runners and it’s all for a great cause.”
