Race Report: 2012 Wetherby 10K, Yorkshire, UK

This report is from our resident personal trainer, Steve Haywood:

The Wetherby 10k 2012- “A cracking little Yorkshire Run”

The Wetherby 10k needed some investigation and so it was that the Race-Calendar.com team, along with family and friends, were lined up at the 2.00pm start at Wetherby racecourse. The weather was brilliant and it looked like the entry limit of 1,000 runners couldn’t have been far off.

There must have been a lot of nerves about as it was announced they were having to delay the start by 10 minutes because of the queues at the loos. However, soon we were off and heading out of the racecourse and after a short stretch of tarmac we were on a farm track for a couple of kilometers. This was slightly problematic if you wanted to overtake as you had to run through thick grass in the middle but otherwise nice, safe, flat, scenic running.

Once off the track it was a sharp turn onto a quiet road and the first “hill” which was a bridge over the A1M motorway, this eventually led to the halfway water station and then through the scenic village of Kirk Deighton. On leaving the village runners followed a cycle track before crossing back over the motorway (the second “hill”) at about 8k which led onto another trail at the other end of the racecourse.

This trail took competitors down to the Harland Way which is a dis-used railway where the field had to do a little out and back loop to get the exact 10k distance in (apparently this slight modification was to make the finish on the flat rather than on a slight hill as there had been some mumblings in the past). The pace, for some, started to pick up down the track and then it was a sharp left and onto the finish about 400 meters away.

The winner was the course record holder and evergreen Darran Bilton from Leeds City AC in the good time of 32mins 45 secs and the first lady home was Emma Yates of York Knavesmire Harriers in 38 mins 7 secs closely followed in by Wetherby AC’s very own Pauline Munro in 38 mins 17 secs, both very good times.

So is this race a “ cracking little Yorkshire run”? If you take a good, varied 10k course, excellent organisation, friendly atmosphere and roll it into one the answer is most definitely”Yes”, give it a go in 2013.
