Race Report: Bude Lifeboat Run, 12th June 2013

This race report comes to us from the race director, Stephen Hutchinson:

With 115 juniors and 242 seniors taking part competition was high and the evening was a resounding success for organisers and participants alike.

Sponsored by Outdoor Adventure and organised by the Launceston Road Runners the RNLI fundraising event saw two strongly contested runs.

The first race starting at 6.30pm was the 1 mile junior race won by Kieran Langman, aged 11 in an impressive six minutes and four seconds. Showing that the Lifeboat Run is for everyone the youngest runner at just three years old was Alexa Lyon. Alexa completed the circuit in 12 minutes and 34 seconds!

The Senior Race of 6 miles was a single lap route using 2 miles of flat cycle-ways for the route out, 3 miles of flat canal towpath for the route back and a connecting 1 mile hilly cross country footpath around the Whalesborough estate.

Won by Mark Jenkin of Bideford AAC in 32 minutes and 33 seconds, Kevin set his team (Bideford AAC) in good stead to also be the overall winning affiliated team. Dan Alsop of St Austell Running Club came in second (33.19) closely followed by Dan Rodgers of Launceston Road Runners (33.47).

The Outdoor Adventure team was overall winners of the non-affiliated teams with the Bude Lifeboat Crew coming in second.

Stephen Hutchinson Race Director said:

‘A special mention must be given to all the marshals who were highly praised by the runners for their guidance, instructions and encouragement around both courses. All the races were marshaled by RNLI volunteers and all proceeds donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the charity that saves lives at sea. A special thank you also goes to Bude Rugby Club for the allowing us to use such splendid facilities.’

Supporters of the run include; Bude Tubes Scaffolding, Metherell Gard Ltd, Computoz Systems, Gecko Headgear, The Weir, HPT Sport and Bott Ltd.

The RNLI operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and has more than 100 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives.
