Race Report: Naunton 19 Trail Race

January 13 proved lucky for some, when the combination of an overnight frost and a crisp sunny day created perfect conditions for runners of the inaugural Cotswold Running Naunton 19 Trail Race.  Starting in the picturesque village of Naunton, the runners enjoyed the undulating footpaths leading them through the beautiful Cotswold countryside.  The field of 88 followed a marked loop that led them through Upper Slaughter, Guiting Wood, and Guiting Power before returning to the Naunton Village Hall.  The sunshine and beautiful surroundings provided the backdrop for an inspiring display of athleticism and willpower.
Royal Engineer RC’s John Gordon made light of the frozen mud and 3 water crossings to win the race in 2:06:37, leading Ladies’ winner Holly Rush of Bradford on Avon by six minutes (2:12:43).  Runners continued to cross the line with a smile for another two hours, each an example of determination as they conquered the undulating route.  Race Director, Kurt Dusterhoff, summed up the event, “We could not have hoped for a better combination of location, weather, and participants. The runners were amazing – their smiles and laughter as they crossed the finish line topped off a wonderful day in the Cotswolds.”
