The second Sub-4 Werrington 10K is an updated version of the old Werrington 6 (mile), held largely on country lanes around Werrington, Staffordshire. The course record of the Werrington 6 was 28 minutes, held by Clifton Bradeley, who now owns the company Sub-4, that sponsors the new 10K. Sub-4 was generously offering a gold sovereign for the course record. As the distance was longer, the time had been flexed up to 29:50.
Come the morning of the race, the weather was cold and wet with a bit of wind thrown in too. That didn’t stop the good folk of Staffordshire who turned out in their vest and shorts to claim a gold sovereign. Runners from further afield including Coventry Godiva, Salford Harriers, Wolves & Bilston and Ivanhoe Runners also came along, not content just making up the numbers.
The HQ is at Moorside High School which has a gym hall for the HQ, changing facilities and showers. The majority of people were keeping the gym warm up to the start time of 10:30. The start is run on the school grounds for 200 yards before heading out onto the roads and country lanes of Werrington. The course is described as undulating with a small hill on about 2 miles and a medium one at about 4.
The early pace was set by Stephan Walley of Trentham and Namir Batavia of Coventry Godiva. However, it was the local Trentham runner who came through bringing home the race in 35:08. He was followed by unattached runner Simon Myatt in 35:25 and Matt Driver of Newcastle AC in 35:30.
In the ladies race Ruth Watchorn-Rice took the winners prize in 41:32, by beating Rachel Chatwin of Buxton by 59 seconds. Local unattached runner, Morgan Wiltshire finished third in 43:19.
Trentham Running Club won both the men’s and the ladies team race, although, the ladies race was much closer, only being won by one position over Cheadle.
A total of 159 runners completed the race, with 28 trophies and prizes being handed out. The course record remains intact for the 2014 race, unless it is won at another great local race, the Cheddleton 10K (pudding run) in November. All proceeds from the pudding run go to the charity, Cancer Research.
