The weather was kind on Saturday as the 103, 10k entrants and 35 fun runners gathered in the beautiful grounds of Shane’s Castle. The crowd took advantage of the sunshine and most arrived very early, relaxing or warming up at the Old Station Building.

There was a very friendly atmosphere at this “first time” charity event which attracted some familiar names from the local 10k circuit. The race got under way at 2pm sharp and by the first water station it was clear there were three men battling for podium places, Stephen Prentice and Dennis Scott were inseparable with Vilius Pakalniskis not far behind. Oliver cook, Ian Gillespie and Chris Heath followed closely.

It was a similar story for the Women, Gemma Turley leading the way with Janice White and Rhonda Brady giving chase.

By the 5K marker the shade provided by the Randalstown Forest and the cooling breeze from the river Main were welcomed by most runners, the heat didn’t seem to affect finish times too much but there were some tired faces crossing the line.

Stephen Prentice (Enniskillen RC)  clinched victory in 34.33, just ahead of Dennis Scott (North Down AC) in 34.40. Vilius Pakalniskis (Unattached) took 3rd with a time of 38.22.

Gemma Turley (Springwell Running Club) was the first lady home in 41.14, Janice White (Forge Harriers) and Rhonda Brady (Unattached) crossed the line together at 42.18.

The organizers wish to thank Shane O’Neil of Shane’s Castle Estates and Glen and Aaron of Champion Chips Ireland for their help. Hopefully this event will become a regular fixture on the local calendar!
