Race-Calendar Newsletter | Week Ending 12 th May 2013

Hey runners,

For better or for worse, the sport of running is in the headlines more than ever since the horrific day of the Boston Marathon bombings. What it has done however is galvanize the global running community. Looking through this weeks running news, it’s interesting how it seems many commentators who would never consider discussing running, are happy to express their opinions in the media. One such story this week is that of 16 year old Alana Hadley of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, will make her marathon debut in Cleveland on Sunday. Although Hadley is an accomplished athlete and competed in the Mercedes Half Marathon in Birmingham, Alabama in February.

Health experts however are warning that 16 is too young for a teenager to run the marathon. There is precedent however, with  Cathy Schiro, later Cathy O’Brien, whose 2:34:24 at age 16 is still the American high school record for the marathon. She later went on to compete at the Olympics. However, many commentators are suggesting that runners of this age are not physically or mentally mature enough for the challenge.
