16 year old wins Knowle Fun Run
The cold & wet weather could not put a dampener on last Sunday’s 30th Knowle Fun Run. The winner was a 16 year old student Joshua Naisbett who completed the 5.2 mile course in 26 mins 55 secs, less than 1 minute ahead of 2nd home Ellis Cross. Probably the youngest ever winner of the event Joshua who aspires to be a future Olympian runners said after the run ‘We run as a family and there were 5 of us taking part. I train every night of the week. I usually run and win shorter cross country runs, but this proves I can win Road Fun Run’s as well. Sorry gotta dash back to my studies I’ve GCEs starting on Tuesday.

Nick Owen, stalwart presenter of BBC Midlands Today, set the runners on their way on the stroke of midday. ‘We are grateful to one of our nominated beneficiaries, AgeUK Solihull, who are also celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, who offered to invite Nick along’, said Knowle and Dorridge Lion President John Heard. ‘He did a great job entertaining the Mini Runners and gave words of encouragement for the Fun Runners about to set out on their 2 lap run. He is a true professional and really nice guy’.
‘We were delighted to have nearly 1900 entries for this year’s special 30th Fun Run’ said organiser Lion Noel Kinahan. ‘The Lions were grateful for the continued sponsorship from Hunters Estate Agency, who donated commemorative ceramic mugs for all the 5 mile runners, as well as many other companies who helped cover the costs of staging the event. We really appreciate how lucky we are to have the support of a long list of local companies. This enables us to tell runners that every £ of entry fee, donation or sponsorship raised will go to our nominated charities, which also included Marie Curie Big Build, St Basil’s and other local causes. We hope to have raised over £40,000 when all the runners sponsorship has been received. Many runners raised funds for their own favourite charities and we shall never know how many thousands of pounds to add to that we receive’
The day started well when 250 under 9 year old Mini Runners wearing their complimentary red Fun Run t-shirts were cheered around the Arden school fields all keen to pick up their Mars bar and certificate of achievement. The winners Oliver Adnitt, Erin Winslow, Jake Evans and Sophia Donovan all received trophies & gifts courtesy of MiniRun sponsor Sytner Mini.
‘It’s great to have a team organising such a popular and successful community event,’ said President John. ‘It takes well over 6 months effort for some of our Lions and 200 helpers on the day, we now have to thank so many people, too many to mention here, who helped to ensure the day went off without a hitch. Anyone interested in ensuring the continued success of the Knowle Fun Run should contact the Knowle and Dorridge Lions now via 2013@knowlefunrun.org.uk
