Race Report: Lancaster Festive 4k Fun Run, UK, 27th December 2012

This from the organisers at Lancaster & Morecambe AC who put on a festive race to put runners on the right track for the New Year:

155 Runners assembled on the 27th December for the annual Festive 4k fun run organised by Lancaster & Morecambe Athletic Club. Amongst the competitors were some runners in fancy dress including Santa, a Christmas tree and Mrs Christmas. The fun run was an ideal opportunity to have fun and help after the indulgence of turkey and Christmas pudding.

The fun run started with a lap of the running track before heading onto the cycle track towards Carlisle Bridge before turning and returning following the same route, giving an ideal opportunity to keep an eye on your opponents going in the opposite direction. The runners were greeted with ideal conditions – a cool but calm morning with the rain holding off for the event.

First home running from Kendal AC was Danny Parkinson covering the 4k (2.5miles) distance in 12.34. Second from the Fylde coast running for Blackpool Wyre and Fylde was Andrew Woodward in 13.30, followed closely by Lancaster & Morecambe AC’s own Kieran Rowlands in 3rd in 13.35.

In the female event Lancaster & Morecambe took the title with 17 year old Sarah Hodgson in 14.19 placing her 9th overall. Second female also from Blackpool Wyre and Fylde was birthday girl Molly Betmead in 14.58, followed by her team mate Amelia Beaman in 15.23.

The youngest competitor being supported round by Mum and Dad was 3 year old Harry Singleton. The oldest competitors were all vet 75 (Bernard Elkington, Evelyn Elkington and Lawrie Woodley)

Alan Gregory a cerebral palsy sufferer took on the 4k challenge using his walking frame. He walked the full route with his Dad John to fundraise for disabled twins Katie and Emma Sutcliffe who have spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. The money raised will help pay for life-changing surgery that could see them walk unaided for the first time. To support Alan please visit www.justgiving.com/AlanGregory4K.

Host club Lancaster & Morecambe AC had 53 club members competing and representing the Club. Well done to all those who took part.

The organisers and Lancaster & Morecambe Athletic Club would like to thank everyone who helped and supported the event including the marshals, runners and officials. Special thanks go to the event sponsors Standfast, The Runner’s Centre, Barton Grange, Tesco, Sainsburys and Shoestring results.
