Race Reports: Surrey Half Marathon 2014, UK, 9th March 2014

This report was sent in by Becky Russell from All About Triathlons (now aat events):

The inaugural Surrey Half Marathon took place this weekend, with runners making their way from Guildford Spectrum to Woking town centre and back, supported by great spectators, bands on route, cheerleaders, hard working volunteers and great weather!

Congratulations to the top three men and women, many of whom had come all the way from Kenya to compete:

  1. Nicholas Kirui – 1:03:19
  2. Boniface Kongin – 1:03:31
  3. Phil Wicks – 1:04:43
  4. Perendis Lekapana – 1:13:30
  5. Linah Cherop – 1:14:50
  6. Gladys Kyambai – 1:15:03

Race Director Toby Jenkins said “the event was fantastic, a huge success. We’ve seen some great talent, some really fast runners, with everyone including club runners, charity athletes, runners taking part in their first half marathon, and all the kids having a great run.”

The Kid’s Races inspired the next generation of runners with lots of local children taking to the athletics track to complete two laps and earn their medals to the delight of spectators in the stands.

Charity runners were a real feature of the event, with a predicted £250,000 raised for charities including Shooting Star CHASE, Woking and Sam Beare Hospices, and Parkinson’s.

The organisers would like to thank all of the runners who took part, the spectators who lined the route, the amazing bands on the roadside, the volunteers who gave their time so generously, and the event partners who made the day possible – Runners Need, Guildford Spectrum, GU Energy, Radisson Blu, Virgin Care, Seymours, Colbournes and the App Garden.

Mayor of Guildford Cllr Diana Lockyer-Nibbs said: “I think it’s amazing that we’ve got a half marathon for Guildford and Woking which is very near. I’d never have believed we would have this number of people. I think the weather has helped but it’s been an absolutely wonderful day.”
