Starfish Breakfast 10K Run

Starfish Breakfast Run and Picnic

Sunday 23rd September 2012

Despite the rain, 146 runners set off on Sunday morning in a sea of orange around Brockwell Park, Brixton on a 5k or 10k route.

The kids were kept occupied with a bouncy castle, face painting and a dramatic 100m dash finishing under the gantry.

Peter Ranyard won the men’s 5k again this year in 18.51, beating his 2011 winning time. Swiftly followed by Mark Blee with an impressive 20:24 and Judah Blair coming in at 22:19. Not far behind came the winning women, Rebecca Gillam completing the course in 25:32, followed by Hannah John at 25:56 and Sarah Cahill coming in at 26:38.

The 10k was won by first time Breakfast Run participant Hugh Salway who completed the route in 37:08. He was followed in by David Daley with a time of 41:26 and Jack States who clocked up 42:40.

The women also put in a strong performance, with Caroline Haines leading with an impressive time of 43:30, followed in by Lavia Long with 44:35 and Deirdre Wallace who recorded 47:39.

At the end of the race runners were rewarded with a medal, tasty picnic bag and refreshing Lucozade drink. Delicious Nando’s food was available for all and professional masseuses were on hand to ease any aches and pains.

With such a range of levels amongst the participants, it proved a fun day for all. Runners enjoyed the day – “Great run, very well organised, despite the hills, “it was fantastic despite the rain!”

Ignite did a fantastic job once again, offering their time and expertise to make it a great day. The event was sponsored by Standard Bank which means proceeds can go towards supporting children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDs in South Africa.
