Alastair Muir from the Rotary Club of Calne sent us these wonderful shots from the weekend’s 10K & this report:
Once again, dry weather prevailed for the 25th annual Rotary Club of Calne Bowood 10km Fun Run on Sunday 24th March. Although the temperatures hovered around freezing, nearly 300 runners and walkers, from as far away as Doncaster and Peterborough, entered the race to sample the delights of the countryside in Bowood, as well as raising money for Wiltshire Blind and Calne Welfare Charities.
The Race Director, Alastair Muir, and William Lansdowne started the race at 10am after saying a word of thanks to the participants for supporting the event.
Despite the recent rain and snow, the course was in better condition than expected. The race started with a mile stretch on tarmac, ideal to give the runners a chance to find their legs and spread out before starting the cross country sections, firstly on footpaths and then tracks through the woods. The last mile and a half was past the scenic lake at Bowood and through the park before a final 100m sprint to the finish on tarmac.
For the fourth year in a row, the winner was 19 year old Simon Nott from Calne. The final result was by no means certain though with Rob Mann from Salisbury only 2 seconds behind Nott and George Gurney from Melksham only 4 seconds behind the winner.
The fastest lady was Jill Westwood from Bradford on Avon in 45 minutes 29 seconds followed by Shelley Miles from Pewsey in 47 minutes 16 seconds and Gillian Saunders from Corsham in 47 minutes 40 seconds
First in the 16 and under category was Craig Jordan from Calne in 49 minutes 29 seconds followed by Theo Farrant from Bristol in 52 minutes 10 seconds
140 runners finished the course within an hour. Race Director, Alastair Muir, presented the prizes and medals.
Prizes and medals were kindly donated by Regency Presentations of Calne and Ronhill clothing. This was the 25th annual 10km Charity Fun Run organised by the Rotary Club of Calne. It is anticipated that the Rotary Club of Calne will be able to give over £1,500 from the event – to be split between Wiltshire Blind and Calne Welfare Charities. The main sponsors of the event were RWE nPower, Wessex Water, Intel and Fyffes.
Our thanks also to St John Ambulance who provided First Aid cover, the Bowood staff who helped so much and to all the Rotarians and their friends who provided the marshals and helpers.
Bowood kindly opened the coffee shop, which was welcomed by spectators and runners before and after the
event.
